What to do in the Riviera Maya- Depart from Cancun or Puerto Aventuras- Which is better

People sometimes do not understand the difference between staying in the Riviera Maya, Mexico and staying in Cancun, Mexico. Cancun is the anchor city and the Riviera Maya is a 100 mile long stretch of highway that runs near the beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Many people want to go to Cancun or the Riviera Maya and go Deep Sea Fishing. Deep Sea Charter fishing is one of the great things to do in the Riviera Maya and you will find some of the best Deep Sea fishing in the World there. But you must understand where you are so you have a better idea of where you want to do Deep Sea Charter Fishing while in the Cancun area on your vacation or holiday.

If you are in Cancun the logical choice for Deep Sea Fishing is to depart from Cancun. However if you are in the Riviera Maya the decision is not so simple. If you are in Playa del Carmen the first thing you need to understand is that Deep Sea Charter fishing boats do not depart from Playa del Carmen as they do not have a safe harbor – they are just there on the open Caribbean. You will depart from Cancun, which is about 1 hour away or you will depart from Puerto Aventuras about 15 minutes away from Playa del Carmen. So aside from the distance which place is better choice for your Deep Sea Fishing Charter?

To answer that question; “From where should I depart for a Cancun Deep Sea fishing charter? Should I travel to Cancun or go to Puerto Aventuras,” you need a bit of a geography lesson.

See the Continental Shelf drop off is very far offshore from Cancun and very near to shore from Puerto Aventuras. So your boat travel time to get to the fishing grounds in a Cancun fishing Charter will be about 30-45 minutes. While your travel time to get to the fishing grounds in a Puerto Aventuras fishing Charter will be about 5 minutes. The Continental Shelf drop off is very near the shore in Puerto Aventuras. In fact from your Puerto Aventuras boat charter you will be able to see people on the beach the whole day as you fish. From a Cancun fishing Charter you will lose sight of land in about 30 minutes and spend most of the day out of the sight of land.

So where is the fishing better? Some months the fishing is better in Cancun and some months the Deep Sea Fishing is better in Puerto Aventuras. We recommend you contact you charter company and ask for a recent catch of the day to determine where you want to go. Here are couple that can help you.
