Stockholm is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals. Set across 14 islands, connected by 57 bridges, this charming city is packed with attractions for every visitor. If you are only in Stockholm for just a few days, then make sure these top 5 must-see Stockholm attractions are on your itinerary.

Gamla Stan

The Old Town of Stockholm is perhaps its most favoured attraction, and for good reason. Taking up most of the small island of Stadsholmen, the Gamla Stan is one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in the world, and a day spent exploring its antique treasures is well worth it. It features narrow winding cobblestone streets and alleyways, lined with traders selling treats, handicrafts and antiques. Also on display is a range of galleries and cafes and restaurants. This area is often considered the pulsing heart of Stockholm. A few of the sites in the Gamla Stan that you shouldn’t miss include the striking Royal Castle, one of the largest palaces in the world, as well as Sweden’s national cathedral, Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum and Riddarholmen Church, Stockholm’s only remaining medieval abbey, built in the late 1200s.

The Vasa Museum

Stockholm’s maritime museum is named after its most prized possession: The Vasa, a striking seventeenth-century, 69 metre-long warship. The only preserved one of its kind in the world, the ship is a site to behold. Adorned with hundreds of carved sculptures, more than 95 percent of the great wooden ship is original, despite having spent 333 years below Stockholm’s waters. Visit the museum and marvel at this unique piece of art and learn about its history through nine exhibitions, including a film on the Vasa, shown in 16 different languages. There is little wonder why this museum attracts over one million visitors a year.

The Royal National City Park

One of Stockholm’s most striking features is just how green the city is, and one of its greenest areas is the beautiful Royal National City Park. It spans 27 square kilometres, comprising of the districts of Ulriksdal, Haga, Brunnsviken and Djurgarden. When established in 1996, the park became the world’s first National City Park. It is now Stockholm’s most visited recreation area. As well as its abundance of nature and wildlife, the park is home to three Royal palaces, several museums, an amusement park, as well as many cafes, restaurants and hotels.

Skansen

This fascinating open-air museum and zoo will take you back in time, to the Sweden of hundreds of years ago. Located on the Djurgarden, Skansen is the oldest open-air museum in the world. As well as traditional dwellings, the museum has displays showing traditional arts and crafts, antique shops, farming life and many other cultural displays. There is something here for everyone.

A sightseeing boat tour

Seeing a city from the water always provides a fascinating and unique perspective, and as Stockholm is built on the water, a boat tour is a must-do. There are plenty of different tours to choose from depending on what interests you. Some tours head to Stockholm’s beautiful archipelago, Skarsgarden, while others cruise the city’s canals, allowing you to spot famous buildings, bridges, parks and other attractions.

Stockholm is a melting pot of attractions, with so much to see and do. If you only have limited time however, you can book yourself into an Arlanda Airport hotel, mark these attractions on your map and set out early to make the most of your time in beautiful Stockholm.
