Switzerland is a charming country of exquisite attractions visited by millions every year. Switzerland, located in Western Europe, has its culture and heritage heavily influenced by three neighboring giants - Germany, France and Italy. With its multifaceted attractions like snowcapped mountains, picturesque valleys, scenic lakes, rich culture and heritage, historical monuments, diverse cuisine, summer and winter adventure sports and shopping facilities, Switzerland lures scores of tourists.
Switzerland essentially is a landlocked country geographically divided between the Alps Mountain range, Central Plateau and Jura mountains. Although Alps form the greater part of territory, population is mainly concentrated on the Plateau, where the largest cities are to be found. Cities, lakes, mountains and historical monuments roughly form the categories which the destinations Switzerland tourism entails. The main tourist locations in Switzerland are Zurich, Lucerne, Zermatt, Interlaken, Geneva, Basel, Davos, Saint Moritz, Laussane, Grinderwarld, Bern, Saas-Fee, Montruex and Arosa.
Zurich has a lake and river at the heart of city, magnificent view of snowcapped Alps on the horizon and a host of various other attractions. With over fifty museums, more than hundred art galleries, international fashion labels and indigenous Zurich designs on exhibit and most flamboyant and lively night life in Switzerland – Zurich has it all. Apart from these, recreational activities ranging from bathing in areas in riverside and lakeside to spectacular hike to Uetliberg mountain also add to the assortments.
Lucerne, situated by Lake Lucerne, is nestled within an impressive mountainous panorama. Important attractions of Lucerne are Chapel Bridge, Culture and Convention Center of Lucerne, Swiss Museum of Transport, cruises in Lake Lucerne and excursion mountains of Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn.
Zermatt lies at the foot of Mount Matterhorn, perhaps the most famous mountain in the world. The destination, which is a car free zone, has as its main attractions - Gornergrat – a cog railway which winds its way upto mountain, Matterhorn Museum and Glacier Paradise or Klein Matterhorn which is the highest place in Europe able to be reached by a cableway and with a viewing platform and highest glacier palace in the world.
Interlaken lying on an alluvial plain between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz is a vacation destination marked by three mighty mountains, Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. It is the starting point of many activities.
Embedded between Alpine peaks and hilly terrain of Jura, Geneva lies in the bay where river Rhone leaves Lake Geneva. The important attractions of Geneva are Jet d’eau, Saint Pierrie Cathedral, Palace of the United Nations, International Museum of Red Cross and cruises on Lake Geneva.
Basil situated on both sides of river Rhine in the three country corner of Switzerland, Germany and France, is the third largest city in Switzerland. It is the melting pot of diverse cultures, multifaceted history and modern art and architecture.
Davos with an international ambience is the largest holiday resort in Alps and also the highest town in Alps. Not only suited for sports and conferences, Davos is a health resort with long tradition.
Not many cities have managed to retain their historic features as successfully as Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The old town of Bern is declared a UNESCO world heritage site. There is an art gallery exhibiting most famous works of artist, Paul Klee in Bern.
Tourism in Switzerland has provision for summer and winter adventure sports like hiking, cycling, skiing, snow kiting, snow biking, snow tubing, ice diving, rock climbing, skii diving, airboard etc.
