However these days, most information is available on a real time basis and is updated regularly by railway officials. IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited) is the website for online enquiries and reservation of railway tickets. There is a full section on enquiries including reservation enquiries, PNR enquiry, train enquiry, railway enquiry etc.
If you want to enquire about particular train, go to train enquiry section and search on basis of train name or train number. The required result will be displayed showing source and final station including all the stops on the route. You can also get further details like whether the departure or arrival is as per schedule or late. If there is any delay, it will be reflected in the information displayed and you can plan as per the information available.
Another way for general enquiry about trains is to go to railways website and go to train between important stations section. There after filling some important details like source station, destination station, travel dates, class, train type, one way or return journey, you can see list of available trains. On clicking details, you can get arrival and departure time, journey time, stops, halt times etc. You can also check availability whether ticket is available, in reservation against cancellation ticket or in waiting list status. You can also check fares for different trains. There is discount for people belonging to certain categories like defense, parliament etc. There is special discount for senior citizens (30%-40%) which can be availed. However before boarding train, do carry some identification papers like PAN card, driving license, unique identification number, passport etc which may be required by railway officials.
You can also make PNR enquiry. PNR or Passenger Name Record is a 10 digit number which can be seen on top left side of the ticket. You can go to http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html and enter pnr number to check the current status like ticket has been confirmed or not, RAC ticket or waiting list rank has improved or not.
