Excursions in Madrid-Spain

Alcala de Henares:

This is an old University town which is located at a distance of thirty kilometers from Madrid and this was once a flourishing town in the times of Renaissance. This university was established by Cardinal Cisneros in the year 1498 and is a worth visiting place. The town also has city walls which were built during the 15th century and the famous Iglesia Magistral Church, Casa de Cervantes and Bernardas Convent which were constructed in the 17th century. You will also find some remains of the Gothic, Roman and Pre-historical times outside the town.

Chinchon:

This is a romantic town which is situated at a distance of 50km out of Madrid and is known for the beautiful Plaza Mayor and Main Square which is covered with arcades. Most of the local festivals like bull fighting and performances of various theatre actors held at this main square.

You can also visit the remains of 15th century old Castle in the village where the famous painting of Goya is displayed. This village is also popular among the citizens of Madrid for its gastronomy.

Aranjuez:

This is a small and beautiful village which is famous for Palacio Real which was constructed in between the 16th and the 17th century. Throne Hall and the Porcelain Room are of particular interest in this palace.

Castia Del Labrador is another place which is worth visiting in the village as you can see some huge collection of work in porcelain along with some unique collection of antique watches and clocks.

El Escorial:

El Escorial is a popular monastery which is located at a distance of 50km from Madrid and this monastery was built by Philip II. It took the labor almost twenty-one years to construct this monastery and the design was made by Juan de Herrera and Bautista de Toledo.

You can also visit the central Chapel, throne Hall, Capilla Mayor and the museum in the town.

El Valle de los Caidos:

This valley is situated at a distance of eight kilometers from the town of El Escorial. This is also known as the “Valley of Fallen” and it was built by General Franco after the fall of civil war in Spain during 1940. The General was later also buried in the valley after his death. This monument contains a huge cross with a length of almost one hundred and fifty meters.
