What is Data Provisioning?
Some people might find the term data provisioning new and may not know its meaning too. However, data provisioning has been around for quite a while now and if you search on the internet, you will surely find many articles explaining what data provisioning is as well as the companies who are offering data provisioning.
Before going into details of data provisioning, the basic question is, what is data provisioning? In simplest of terms, data provisioning means the process where you create, prepare and equip a network which allows providing services (data) to the users. So, for a layman, data provisioning provides users with access to data and resources. This data can and will be relevant according to organization and the access may differ according to the employee status and need. Data provisioning is usually done under a Chief Information Officer (CIO) who is managing the whole process. Data provisioning involves technology but human resources are necessary as well. Both IT and human resources will cooperate to provide users with access to data, give authorization to each person who wants to access the data. This authorization will be given according to the management’s policy and the status of the employee. Unique user ID’s are assigned so that users may access database. Separate applications are used for specific hardware resources such as for mobile phones, ipads, laptops and computers.
While creating a data provisioning network and system, the most important factor is security. Access level and rights are granted with utmost care to ensure privacy and security. If access rights and privileges are ensured, it will minimize the vulnerability of the system and by creating user groups it will reduce the amount of custom configuration, so there will not be a need to create separate access level for each person granted access. Groups can be formed and a new induction can be added to any group depending upon the access level granted by the management.
There are two sides of data provisioning, server provisioning means to prepare a server with systems, data and required software so it is ready for any network operation. A typical exercise while preparing a server would be to select a server, get the software’s include operating system, device drivers, applications, customize and configure the system according to your needs and create a boot image. You might also need to change the IP address, gateway so the server can find network and to keep it on the network so you can audit the system. Server provisioning is actually based on resource requirement. You can use hardware and software according to your requirement.
The other side is user provisioning. It refers to creating of accounts and later maintenance and deactivation. This side has already been discussed. The CIO is responsible for all these activities.
