Why Use a Special Bed for Bedsores?

By Amit Subscribe to RSS | July 21st 2012 | Views:

Bedsores are downright painful and dangerous for the sufferer; they are also far too common for those who are bedridden for any length of time. Using a special bed for bed sores can mean alleviating or avoiding this problem altogether so the patient is as comfortable as possible and is recommended for anyone that will be bedridden.

Understanding how bedsores develop can help you to understand why a special bed for bed sores is needed. These sores are actually ulcers or breaks in the skin caused by prolonged pressure. As a person is motionless in bed for long periods of time, their own body weight pushes down on the skin and underlying tissues. This reduces circulation in this area, which in time will cause the skin and tissue to break open.

The body withstands this pressure when sleeping by naturally turning itself, however, when a patient is immobilized and in one position for days on end, this will cut off the circulation in these areas causing ulcers or bed sores to develop.

A special is meant to alleviate the pressure on the skin by distributing this pressure more evenly. Air mattresses or special foam with air pockets are two popular types of designs. Regular mattresses with metal springs only push back up on the back and other areas of the body whereas air and foam will shape and mold itself to the contours of the body, alleviating this pressure.

Bedsores are not to be taken lightly and in some cases may lead to more serious problems such as infection. Choosing a can avoid these risks and also allow the patient to be more comfortable and healthier overall. They're an affordable way to ensure someone's health and comfort when bedridden for any length of time.
