Using Salicylic Acid Cream

By Nicoleflourweens Subscribe to RSS | December 28th 2011 | Views:

Though salicylic acid cream does its job satisfactorily in most of the cases, you shouldn’t expect fast results especially if you are treating skin irregularities of relatively severe nature. You may need at least few weeks before you can start seeing the results of the treatment. If you fail to notice any development or improvement in the condition even after few weeks, then it is time to put aside the product and look for another option to deal with the problem.

Salicylic acid creams are used to treat acne and some other skin conditions. The cream is a topical salicylate that works by making the skin soft, swell and slough off. The cream is generally used in certain concentration especially if you are buying a non-prescription or over the counter product.

As like any other medicinal side effects, salicylic acid cream is also associated with some side effects. You can have minor to severe side effects, though not very common, and you can also minimize the undesirable effects by taking certain precautions.

Minor and common side effects include redness, dryness, etc.; while severe side effects include rashes, severe itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the tongue, mouth, face, lips, and severe skin irritation. The list of side effect can go further but the occurrence of serious kinds of side effects isn’t common. If you take the necessary precautions before starting treatment with salicylic acid cream, you can minimize the side effects to a great extent. You should first read the accompanying instructions carefully and follow them. Moreover, it is a wise idea to do a spot test, before going for a full-scale treatment, when you want to start treatment with any new product.

Another thing that you have to keep in mind before using salicylic acid cream is the fact that the acid can negatively react to some medicines including dietary supplement and herbal preparations. Moreover, if you are a known allergic subject to aspirin, beware and don’t use any product containing salicylic acid unless you are prescribed by a doctor. You have to inform your doctor about all the medical condition that you suffer with, including any allergies, skin infections, being prone to skin irritation, if you have kidney or liver disease, etc. Moreover, if you are pregnant, do not use salicylic acid cream, or any other product containing this acid, without first consulting your doctor.

For minor skin problems, you can take any over the counter salicylic acid cream that offers the treatment to your problem. Most of the non-prescription preparations do not come in higher concentrations and using them on your own usually does not subject you to any severe risks. However, don’t forget to do a spot test before using the cream on wider areas.

Salicylic acid has become one of the widely used ingredients of many skin care products and its cream is one of the options that a common person opts for when he or she has to deal with any minor skin problem.
