Undiscovered Holiday Destinations
If travelling where everyone else goes is not your cup of tea, then it may seem as though there are fewer and fewer undiscovered locations left in the world. With cheap flights and the rise of the Internet making the world seem smaller, the options may be fewer than they were two decades ago. However, choosing the road less travelled is still possible in the twenty-first century.
Colca Canyon in Peru is a canyon twice the size of the Grand Canyon, and yet few people outside of Peru have even heard of it. Most visitors to Peru visit Machu Picchu and little else, although if you want to see some undiscovered and breath-taking scenery, then Colca Canyon is well worth a view.
Much like Colca Canyon, Western Australia often is overshadowed by more famous tourist destinations. If you are travelling to Australia, chances are that you are heading across to the East coast, to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane. However, Australia’s West Coast is truly undiscovered territory. Using Perth as a base, you can travel round the coast to the Margaret River, where you can drive for hours without seeing a person and have a world-class beach to yourself.
If you fancy something a little more exotic, then the Philippines is a real gem. Some parts of the Philippines have been little explored by Western tourists, meaning you will get to experience the thrill of being one of the first Westerners to visit. The Sagada region is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the two millennia old rice paddies, still as pristine as when they were created.
When someone suggests that you travel to the Muslim world, wine tasting is often not what you think of. However, Morocco offers wine tasting holidays that rival those of the north Mediterranean. There are a number of historic wineries that will both surprise and enchant.
Wherever you are travelling in the world, although particularly if you are going off the beaten path, be sure to check home office guidelines before travelling. Make sure that you have personal travel insurance and buy yourself an open flight back, or leave enough money in your account for a return flight. This will be invaluable if your trip into the wilderness turns out to be more than you bargained for. However, it is stories like these that make you want to travel to new parts of the world, and not just sit on a beach or by a pool for two weeks.
