Traumatic Brain Injury: Prognostic Signs to Watch out For

By Diede School Subscribe to RSS | April 21st 2012 | Views:

The brain is the bossiest part of the body—it tells all the other parts what to do all the time—which is why it is also the most important. Your body knows this, so it employs a state-of-the-art security system for your brain: a thick skull, cushion-like gelatinous membranes, and fluid that can reduce the effects of a blow. However, in spite of all these, the brain can still get injured. When that happens, a lot of problems arise.

Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI, occurs when the brain gets hurt. This could be due to a lot of things, but most TBIs are caused by vehicular accidents, sports injuries, and falls. It is the leading cause of death for people under 45 years of age, and it is estimated that a TBI-causing accident occurs every fifteen seconds in the US alone. Although the best solution to TBI is not letting it happen in the first place, it still does. Sometimes, after head trauma, injury to the brain is not evident. Here are the telltale signs that something has gone wrong.

Most people who walk away from an accident usually say that they’re fine. This could be true, or maybe they’re suffering from TBI that hasn’t manifested yet. The most basic symptoms of a head injury are unexplained headaches and dizziness. Lack of coordination and vertigo, accompanied by stiffness or weakness in some parts of the body, are also other manifestations of TBI.

There are also other symptoms that you can use to gauge how serious the injury is. Most patients usually report having behavioral changes, the most often example of which is impulsiveness. People who suffer from TBI can be unable to control their urges, which can lead to socially inappropriate behavior and irritation.

Mood swings, sudden bouts of depression, or sleeping problems, are also common symptoms of TBI. Brain injury symptoms can also be cognitive, like unusually bad memory or inability to concentrate for long. There was even an instance when a person’s IQ dropped by 47 points after suffering from a brain injury caused by a car accident.

When any of these symptoms become evident, you should talk to a doctor immediately. Depending on the injury’s severity, a long and arduous treatment process might follow, but this has to be done for full recovery. Brain injury recovery treatments are customized to the needs of the patient, and all the patient has to do is to persevere during this time to get better.

Now, if you or someone you know experiences neurological problems like brain injury or even brain tumor symptoms, be sure to talk to the doctor immediately. For more information, you can visit or
