Besides having great spiritual significance, it is also one of the most popularly used herbs in medicines. Thus, more than being an attractive plant, the holy basil also serves a lot of health benefits. Given below are some of the important health benefits of holy basil.

The holy basil has amazing healing powers. The juice of the leaf is a natural tonic for the nerves and is also good to improve memory power. Half a glass of clean basil leaf juice in the morning taken regularly will get rid of the phlegm and catarrhal matter from the bronchial tube. The juice of holy basil is naturally good for many stomach disorders including indigestion and intestinal worms. And it also helps to induce copious perspiration.

The leaves of holy basil are effective in treating mild fever. Diseases like malaria, dengue and common cold are more prevalent in the rainy seasons. A few green leaves of basil holy boiled with tea and consumed once or twice a day can cure such diseases immediately. Here is a smart thing you can do in rainy seasons to stay disease-free. Just have a cup of holy basil tea in the morning and evening. Besides energizing the body and purifying the blood, it also helps to prevent the common diseases. Moreover, basil tea is one of the tastiest drinks in many countries in the world. So if you haven’t tasted it yet, then try it once and relish the taste.

Looking for natural homemade syrup to get rid of acute fever? Take the juice of the holy basil leaves and add a teaspoon of cardamom powder, little honey, and milk. Drink this syrup 3-4 times a day. However, do your own research on the Internet using the services of any of the popular Broadband Providers or consult an experienced Ayurveda practitioner; especially before giving this syrup to your children.

For Cough and Sore throat

Tulsi (holy basil) is one of the most important ingredients in numerous ayurvedic cough syrups. It is effective for problems like asthma and bronchitis. The leaves have an acceptable taste and are good to be chewed raw. People in the hill stations (where holy basil is abundant) enjoy the minty flavor of tulsi.

Insect bites

Holy basil is one prophylactic plant being used to treat a slew of insect bites especially in the forest areas. The juice of holy basil will neutralize the poisonous effect of the insect bite and prevent the poison from entering the bloodstreams.

Skin disorders

Holy basil extract is useful in treating certain types of skin problems. Ringworm can be effectively treated by using the juice extract of holy basil. Over the years, naturopaths have successfully tried out experiments that have proved that holy basil can effectively get rid of leukoderma.

Teeth disorder

The medicinal properties of holy basil make it useful in treating various teeth disorders. The leaves can be dried in the sun for a few days and powdered. This powder can be used for brushing. A better way of doing it is by mixing the holy basil powder with mustard oil and used as toothpaste for brushing. This is one of grandma’s natural tips to prevent teeth disorders. It prevents the development of germs and helps to fight bad breath naturally. It also helps to get rid of pyorrhea (purulent inflammation of the teeth sockets).

As a word of caution, the consumption of holy basil (tulsi) is not ideal for pregnant women and for soon-to-be pregnant women. As a matter of fact, any herb or herbal formula is not good for pregnant or lactating women. Hence, it is good to consult your doctor if you are to take any of the natural herbs during or after pregnancy. Likewise, tulsi (holy basil) is not suitable for children under the age of two.
