Music - a Kind of Therapy That Relieves Tension and Worries

By Randy Collins Subscribe to RSS | January 17th 2012 | Views:

To be free from all our worries sounds like music to our ears. Wait a second! Did I say music? Absolutely. Right from childhood, each one of us has been exposed to different kinds of music, and that's one thing, just like language, that has the potential to express oneself. A child listens to the rhythm of the heartbeat right from its mother's womb. Apparently, that is the first music that any human being listens to. No wonder why we get excited when we listen to the percussion instruments.

Now, how can music free us from all our worries? Well, it is a question that doesn't need much explanation. Whenever you are down, just listen to your favorite song on your personal music player or TV or home audio system, your brain automatically gets involved in the music. Technically, since your brain's activity is diverted to listening to music from all other thoughts, the very fact that you're listening to something that your brain likes gives you a certain amount of happiness. You can call it cheating your brain, but hey, it works.

It is true that music is appealing, but not all genres of music are capable of giving you the desired result. For instance, listening to country music on a weekend relaxing on the couch without any thoughts about work gives you very good peace of mind. But the same genre will not work when you are getting to work on a busy Monday morning. You are rushing to work and you need to listen to pop or techno. When you get to office, you are very brisk and upbeat. Do not listen to soft or light songs when you are going back home, primarily because your body is tired and you'd fall asleep very easily. Hip-hop or metal or new age rock will work fine and it would help you regain that last bit of energy you've got for the day to finish off your daily routine.

Normally, we tend to forget the music part and watch TV for a couple of hours or so before we have dinner and hit the bed. These days a lot of cable providers like Verizon FiOS TV provide music-only channels where you can select a genre that you want and keep playing. You can finish off your household work while at the same time listen to your favorite numbers. What a way to end your day! Music is no more just an exercise; it needs to be considered a therapy for our minds. Be it work place or at home, our minds keep working on various issues and music allows the mind to calm down and enjoy what it likes without much effort. The best part is you get optimum satisfaction, which is what the entire world is searching for.

Just a few things to understand music better. You might be well aware that human beings are capable of listening to sounds from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz frequency range. So the music that you listen to will also cover the same range. But here, we are draw two different variables. The equipment that you use to listen to music and, the artiste's music and vocal range would make all the difference. Both variables are worth consideration. Now, how can the equipment have any value in understanding music? It is pretty clear that the same song will sound different with different players depending upon the setting, the capability and the environment. For instance, a song from an iPod sound dock sounds different when you listen to it with a pair of headphones, or even your home audio system. To have optimum experience, you need to feel the sound stage with surround sound. But that's not possible in all situations.

What's the alternative? Now, if optimizing for the entire frequency range is not possible, then try to at least choose an audio system that covers that maximum output based on its size and portability. Mini portable audio players and most of the mobile phones are capable of playing music these days. They are extremely good when you are on the move and a good alternative for the primary home audio systems.

Secondly, you need to select songs based on the artiste's music and vocal range. If you like heavy thumping beats and crystal clear highs, then choosing heavy metal is not at all an option for you. Heavy metal songs have a lot to do with mid to high frequency, but you will never get that thumping low frequency music. So choosing the right genre, the right artiste and of course the right equipment will allow you to relax and enjoy music the way you want. Remember, it is not just listening but feeling and enjoying.
