Blood Transfusion – an Important Use of Human Tissue
Medical research or medical education requires the use of human body and organs. human tissues have lots of beneficial uses like blood transfusion, bone marrow transplantation, tissue replacement and lot more. Of all uses, live saving by blood transfusion is the most common therapeutic use of human tissue. Blood transfusion is used in patients suffering from hemorrhage and also during heart bypass surgery. Mainly constituted of red and white blood corpuscles and platelets, blood circulates the human body in form of fluid plasma.
Plasma is made of proteins and nutrients, contains protective anti-bodies that prevent bacteria and viruses from affecting the body. But besides these, there are also many factors in blood plasma that quickens or delays formation of blood clot. So nowadays component therapy is mostly used as treatment of this kind involves separation of cells and other substances from whole blood. The separated red blood cells combined with frozen plasma can be administered to a patient to replace lost blood. Likewise, the separated platelets can be used for treatment of skin diseases like for example leukemia. Starting from treatment of hemophilia to burns, each component of the blood can be used on patient to combat high risk and immune disorders.
Patients suffering from anemia were previously administered transfused blood. But now they are treated with recombinant human erythropoietin which enhances the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Researchers are also in progress for developing artificial blood without containing any hemoglobin. It is the red color hemoglobin that transfers oxygen required by different body organs. So this hemoglobin can be genetically prepared or can be taken a human donor and can be used with artificial blood. The main benefit of using artificial blood is that it can be transfused in any patient with undergoing any cross match.
