Are Egg Freeze Guarantee Programs Really Worth It?

When evaluating the criteria that make each egg donor program different than the next, you’ll find that some clinics have a guarantee program in place. While the details may differ, the overall goal is the same: To provide couples with a child by offering multiple egg cycle attempts. These programs are very promising, as they cost slightly more than what one cycle would cost, but allow couples to try up to five cycles, depending on the criteria of the program.

Egg donations are the most effective fertility treatments today, but that doesn’t mean that the majority of couples get pregnant. The success rates are higher because the eggs come from young, fertile women. However, there are many complications that can happen along the way that couples should be aware of. First, there are about six to ten eggs collected on average from a retrieval process. Not all of these eggs will be able to be used, and some will not make it through the egg freeze process. Others may not fertilize properly, and even if all works out ideally, the recipient still has a chance of miscarrying.

While the numbers are still unclear, it appears as if ten to thirty eggs are needed for a successful pregnancy, which means that recipients will often have to go through several cycles before a pregnancy is achieved. While many procedures are successful on the first try, a high number of couples still find themselves going back to the egg donor bank for multiple attempts. As clinics see couples fall into this position quite often, many are offering a guarantee program that essentially guarantees a couple a child – or their money back.

While the details are not quite this black-and-white, the good news is that couples are finally able to take advantage of multiple egg freeze cycles without having to pay for each one. Programs cost a one-time global fee and are open to all couples, with a few exceptions. Most programs want the recipient to be under 50 years of age when the treatment is initiated so that she can continue all cycles if needed at a healthy age. There are also some clinical criteria couples will have to meet, and much of this information rests on the idea that the couple has a fair shot of becoming pregnant with multiple attempts.

With the cost of one cycle of IVF, many couples are left with a one-time option, and if it doesn’t work, they don’t have a child. This places an incredible amount of pressure on couples and also makes them wonder what could have been if the process didn’t work the first time around. When entering into a guarantee program, you can have up to five egg freeze cycle attempts, approaching each one with hopeful expectations, but knowing you have other cycles that can be successful. When you do achieve a successful pregnancy, the program will be completed. You should be able to opt out of the grogram at any time as well.

Even more hopeful is that with improved egg freeze technology, eggs can be frozen immediately using a vitrification process that reduces the chance of ice crystal formation. This technology makes eggs more viable and gives them a higher chance of being fertilized. Coupled with a guarantee program that offers several egg cycle attempts, you can be well on your way to building the family you have always dreamed of.
