Are Carbohydrates in Control of Your Body?

I’m certain that you've heard of Gary Taubes by now. He's a journalist who is very well-known and wouldn't settle for otherwise commonly held beliefs in terms of diet and disease. He put a lot of his life into researching searching through the scientific literature searching for answers. And, when he came to conclusions of his own, Mr. Taubes had the audacity to question a lot of what most people believed about diet in his article.

Taubes main message is one that many bodybuilders already abide: "Carbohydrates are extremely fattening, some more than others and, those of us that tend to put on fat because of the carbohydrates our diet contains." In his confessions defense, here are a few important points Taubes brings us from Biochemistry 101: Insulin is The Hormone which Is Responsible For Helping Us build up and Accumulate More Fat In Our Fat Cells, increase Your Insulin level (By eating A Meal full of Carbohydrate) And a buildup of fat will be your body’s response (Unless You Need That Carbohydrate For Immediate Energy), and Your Insulin Levels are kept Low, And Your Body Will Release Fat From Your Fat Cells. This fat will be burned for energy in theory.

A big difference in separating Gary Taubes from high-protein promoters to low-to-very-low carbohydrate diet is the latter believes that everybody will benefit by sticking to a low-carb diet, that "one diet fits all." Whereas Taubes notices what the biochemistry and endocrinology books read, that everybody responds differently to insulin and carbs.

Are low carb, high protein diets for everybody? Can one diet really suite all? So, what’s the difference between Taubes and bodybuilders’ opinions? Bodybuilders watch their carb consumption and mainly choose from fiber and nutrient rich sources of carbohydrates such as vegetables, fruits and reasonable amount of whole grains. Taubes is also adamant that eating carbs that are less refined and come filled with fiber while decreasing sugar consumption.

When we are talking about food intake, keeping an open mind is very important (because science is always evolving), being willing to adapt and being fully aware of your own body and take an individualized approach to your nutrition consumption to accomplish your goals. It is very important to take on board current training program, medical history, dietary supplement and medicine intake, body fat, weight, body fat, health issues and goals.

The most vital fact about diet is that one approach does not fit all. Lifestyle (eating out, cooking, fast food only etc.), dietary needs, physique goals, nutrition, training programs and many other different factors should be taken on board. Gary Taubes has lots of valid points and he presents these in an engaging manner supported by his own view on the science. However, before jumping on the low carb cart (because much of what Taubes talks about relates to carbohydrate intake which is making us fat), be sure to look closely at your past history and willingness to make changes in your diet and be consistent with them for a good amount of time. It’s up to you, if you want your results to last, you'll need to stick to your new diet for more than just a few days.
