ACT Wellness Center Presents: Advanced Spinal Correction Class by Dr. Caratozzolo
Dr. Caratozzolo, aka Dr. “C”, will dig into his knowledge base as a Chiropractic Sports Physician; exercises and stretches will be discussed and demonstrated in this class. Weather you’re athletically fit or have never worked out a day in your life, the Advanced Spinal Correction Class is for people of all levels of health. This valuable information helps individuals understand how to speed recovery of back, neck and hip problems. Subjects covered include decreasing pain by improving posture, eliminating bad daily habits, and adjusting one’s sleeping position. These are just some of the factors that may be contributing to spinal instability thus slowing a patient’s progress.
Attendees will learn what it takes to create spinal stability and a healthy spinal curvature. Normal spinal curvature allows for balance, flexibility and stress absorption. Why is this important? Optimal function of the spine is the most significant component in eliminating pain and preventing injury. Research has shown that patients with pain improve faster with increased activity. Also, consistent chiropractic adjustments in combination with muscle, ligament and tendon flexibility helps the back, neck and hips to become healthier with increased healthy and balanced joint motion.
Exercise specificity is very important in creating spinal stability; in the Advanced Spinal Correction Class, Dr. C explains and shows individuals the proper use of in-house exercise equipment for spinal stabilization. These specific types of exercises and stretches are often referred as “functional rehabilitation” by athletic trainers and physical therapists.
It is key that the body is exercised in a “functional” manner in order to build specific muscles as well as joint strength and flexibility. A lack of proper functional stability creates a chain reaction from the ground up. The “kinetic chain” begins with the foot/ankle, knee and then hips and lower back. Abnormal motion ultimately affects the entire spine, upper back, neck (which may also cause headaches), shoulders, elbow and wrists.
For example, research findings state, “Persons with LBP who fatigue quicker (lumbar extension endurance) tend to have more quadriceps inhibition (Suter, 200)” and “Localized lumbar paraspinal muscle fatigue causes increased quadriceps inhibition (Hart, et al, 2005)”. So what does that mean? It means the muscles in your legs that help to support your low back can become weak, and then tend to misfire. If this happens, your whole body compensates causing a forward lean. Your ankles and knees take on extra stress and your gait is affected. Everything starts to become unstable and you’re more prone to injury. This muscular inequity and improper balance between each of the spinal segments can affect the nerve impulses that travel from the brain between the spinal bones called vertebra. A weakened structural integrity can cause abnormal wear and tear which also causes the muscles, ligaments and tendons to grow wrong.
