Printing is associated with our life as one of the basic ingredients of standard living. From the time we open our eyes in the morning to the bedtime. We are surrounded by the world of printing. The newspapers, books, visiting cards, question papers and circulars are all printed. One of the most widely adopted technologies in printing is the offset printing. Here the inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket and then to the printing surface. When this is combined with a lithographic process, a planographic image carrier is the place where the image gets printed. The lithographic process is based on the repulsion of oil and water..

Other than this basic principle, many developments have been subsequently made with the progression of time. offset printing is one of the most common ways of creating printed matter. There are some common applications like newspapers, magazines, brochures and books. When producing large volumes of data is the ultimate objective, not compromising on the quality standards obviously, offset lithography is the technique to be adopted. Many modern publishers and printing houses use computer to plate systems rather than the conventional computer to workflows methodology.

There are many advantages of offset printing compared to other printing technologies. They produce consistently good high image qualities. The printing plates can be quickly and easily produced. The printing plate stays for a longer period of time because there is no direct contact between the plate and the printing press. This is the cheapest method to produce high quality printing and that too in bulk quantities. It is also possible to adjust the amount of ink with the help of screws. There are some disadvantages as well, but are too less compared to the advantages. The nearest competitor for this technology is the digital printing technique, but offset lithography is still the ruler.
