Desalination - the process that removes certain amounts of salt and other minerals from non-consumable water

Our world is made up of about 70% water. About 69% of that is sea water and it’s completely non-consumable. Water engineers have found a way to turn salty sea water into pure drinking water. Using desalination RO systems, the water that once could not be used for consumption can now be made available for use.

Sadly there are millions of people who live without clean potable water and have to make do with what they can find. Many of these people don’t have proper access to clean water and they suffer greatly for it. Thousands of people die from water borne illnesses from unclean water every year. Desalination is a process that removes certain amounts of salt and other minerals from non-consumable water sources using a process called reverse osmosis. In the case of sea water, which is extremely salty (42,000 ppm typically), desalination systems can take this kind of water and make it available and suitable for human consumption. In a standard desalination system water is passed through membranes of tightly coiled semi permeable layers removing various particles, minerals, and salt. Before this can happen, a pretreatment is usually required to remove any floating particles and organics from the water. After the water is processed and all the salt and non-consumable bits are removed, what is left over is pure clean drinking water.
