Part-time Job - an Effective Way of Earning Income and being Responsible
Having a part-time job is a valuable resource in today’s world. Nowadays, in the current increasing cost of living, yours and your children's lifestyle is becoming increasing expensive to upkeep. In case, you are a caring parent and have the ability to provide for all their wants, you might not want to do so for the fear of spoiling them.
So this is where part-time jobs come in. But allowing your children to do a part-time job has both positive and negative effects. Part-time work can range from helping a neighbor walk his or her dog to working at a restaurant or giving moving quotes, etc. Let us look into the pros and cons of the part-time job on children.
Having a part-time job will institute positive thinking. It gives your child a sense of responsibility and will help your child to mature more quickly. Besides that, your child can develop time management skills. Seriously, time management skills are very important for students to learn in order to help them succeed in school, their future careers and even in having a happy family. If students begin learning to manage a tight schedule when still in school, chances are there for them to succeed in later life and will understand the detrimental effects of procrastination. A part-time job makes them to divide time each day for work, school and homework. Without a job, their schedules can be unstructured and they will lack the discipline to manage their time.
Most importantly your child will learn the importance of money early on if they work part-time jobs. They will understand that they cannot automatically get money and that money comes from hard work. Encouraging them to spend money on some of their necessities, including clothes and food, can show them that their day-to-day choices have a financial impact. This might make them to look for better and value added necessities. Also, they will begin to learn how to prepare budgets and stick to them which is an essential in life.
Not only part-time jobs help children to contribute to their present expenses but also helps them to save some extra money which can be invested for their future. Your child might learn to save 10 to 20 percent of their income each month, which should end up being a significant contribution to their university or college tuitions. In addition, they can also learn how to invest their money and make it grow. Letting them learn such lessons early in life stands them in good stead as they get older.
The unfavorable thing about part-time job is that children could be sleep-deprived if he or she works late hours and will have difficulty concentrating in school. They might not be able to manage their time between a part-time job and studying. This could result in them being unable to concentrate on their studies and affect their grades. Sometimes children might not be mature enough to make out the positive and negative behaviors of older and other co-workers. They might be negatively influenced and develop bad habits.
Frankly, if you are a parent, it is your judgment call whether or not to allow your child to work part-time. Depending on their level of maturity, the job worked and the working hours, you might or might not want to allow them to do part-time work. At the end of the day, you need to carefully consider all the aspects of this issue before making the decision and always involve your child in the decision-making process.
