Amazon Gold Ventures : Phishing Scam Targets Amazon
A phishing scam that targets Amazon users have been enabling scammers to rake in some gold through bogus emails.
Such email messages are being sent out to a massive number of email addresses the scammers have and are made to look like an authentic message from Amazon — they usually come from a legit-looking email address and will have the Amazon logo, too.
Scam messages usually contains believable stories, like the cancellation of your order or some discrepancy in your credit card details or that there’s been some technical problem in their site that will require you to register again — stories that are all made-up by the way.
The scam message will include a link that will direct you to a bogus website that looks a lot like Amazon. It will ask you to enter your login details and credit card info to “verify” or “complete your order”.
Amazon does not ask for personal information like that by sending you an email message — ever. So if you get something that seems to be from Amazon, asking you for credit card and bank details, password and such, you should know something amiss.
Check the email address of the sender: emails should end with either @amazon.com oramazon.co.uk.
A badly written email message (horrible grammar and spelling) is another sign that it did not officially come from Amazon. Furthermore, if it addresses you as an “Amazon customer”, be suspicious — authentic notification emails usually address you by name.
What’s more, victims are made to believe that Amazon will take drastic measures like suspending their accounts if they do not comply with the message’s content. They will use such statements as “If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporarily suspend your account”.
The safest bet is to login in to your account directly from Amazon.com and check your order history. And always remember never to click on any link embedded in the email message — just hit up Amazon.com directly. It can save you from a lot of trouble later on.
