Online education and its impact on education system
Internet has evolved as a powerful tool and it is used in many fields. The role that Internet plays in education is interesting. Internet has all kinds of information related to all the fields. Internet has a strong influence on fields like Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Pedagogy and many more. Let us discuss few pros and cons of online education.
Robotic teacher
Internet is a robotic teacher. The student is in complete control of the Internet. Every step is determined by the machine and the student cannot interrupt the machine. The machine shows what to study, followed by relevant questions. If the questions are unanswered or remain wrong, the machine provides further explanation on the subject. There is a server called FunBrain which provides free access to a service called Quizlab. This service allows the teacher to design the questionnaire. Many more software of this type is being created.
Own time
You can study at your own time. Class lectures are being recorded and posted on the college website. These videos can be downloaded anytime and classes can be attended. Those who work full time find online education a useful and effective method of learning. Normally they listen to the lecture videos during weekends or in the evenings.
Affordable
Internet learning is affordable when compared to regular learning. It saves you the trouble of travelling to and fro to attend lectures, and saves money on fuel. Textbooks and other learning materials can be found online through millions of free sources or reasonably priced websites. In regular learning more money needs to be spent on text books and reference books. One can specialize in any field be it law, nursing, marketing, business, art or any other field through online education.
Communication
The communication between a student and a teacher remains close. In a classroom when a number of students are available it is difficult to get the much needed attention. Through online learning a student and a teacher can communicate in a better way. Online education has made education simpler than ever before. Working mothers or full time employees found it difficult to go to colleges due to their job or family responsibilities. But now things have been simplified and gaining a degree has become easy.
Information
Any kind of information that is required in any field can be found on the Internet. Encyclopedias of different subjects look amazing with the amount of pictures, videos and information. Children learning from home get attracted by the pictures and Internet creates an interest in learning. Current world affairs can be accessed in the Internet. Information on weather conditions, news, books, stock exchange, Sports, science, health, technology, entertainment and many more can be found in the Internet. Internet has tons of information stored in its manmade memory.
As always, online education has its own pros and cons. Online education lessens the art of thinking and the art of Creativity is murdered. Students get lazy to think and the answers for any question are provided by referring to the Internet. Any information can be got by the click of a button. There is a lack of face to face interaction and it is difficult to develop relationship with classmates. Internet costs might go high depending upon the speed that you require and the provider you choose. There are providers like Comcast that offer Xfinity Internet Deals, which has special offers for different speed of Internet. Instant feedback and responses are difficult to get from instructors. It might take few days or few hours depending upon the instructor. Since you tend to learn unsupervised, if any problem occurs you have to solve them independently.
