Web design is at once an art and a science. It's an art of course in that it involves design and creativity to get right, and in that it is in some ways subjective – what one person thinks is the ideal web design might be an eyesore to someone else. At the same time though it is also a science in that it involves a very technical process particularly in terms of the coding, and that there are certain ways to measure its successfulness and achieve the maximum impact. Good web design is normally intended to make money for the site owner, and this makes it a business that can benefit from things like market research and iteration cycles.

So in other words it's a very complex process and it's one with many factors and you probably need all the help you can get to make the perfect site. Here we will look at some top tips which can help you to get more from your site from a creative and a technical perspective.

Images Facing In

This is a little trick that the top web designers know and one that is also known in the publishing industry. Basically if you are using both images and content on your page, then it is always best to position the images so that they are facing inwards towards the text.

Every image has a direction that it faces – whether it's because it involves a face looking in a certain direction, whether it's because an object points a certain way, or whether it's just because one side is busier than the other. Psychologically this will draw the gaze of your viewers in that direction unconsciously meaning that you can use this to direct attention. Make sure then that you are directing attention towards the text and this will look much more professional than if the same image were facing the opposite way.

The 'F' Zone

The F zone is where your viewers will look when they first come to your site. This has been monitored over many different websites and may different viewers and it generally holds to be true in all cases. When someone first comes to a website they will look first straight across the top and then down the left hand side and then across the part just below the heading (still along the top). In other words they will look in all the places where you are likely to find a menu, and you can use this to your advantage to make your web design more intuitive to use and to direct attention where you want it to boost sales or increase ad clicks.

Colors

Colors are of primary importance when it comes to web design. First and foremost you must make sure that your site is easy to read (so the contrast needs to be good in other words), but at the same time you need to think about how your colors will affect the mood of your visitor and whether this can help you to achieve what you want your site to accomplish. For instance if you use blues in your design this can have a calming effect and that will help you to keep your visitors on your page longer.
