Samuel Hitchcock, whose family had emigrated from Wales to British West Indies, was Staples successor in 1824. He was considered the institute’s moving spirit until 1845. The Hitchcock family was represented by an alligator, which was inspired by the traditional dragon image that was used to represent Welsh entities.
