Things to Do in Munich

Though not famed as a tourist hotspot, Munich is a surprisingly fascinating city with a lot to offer the curious visitor, all within easy reach of the central hotels in Munich.

Museums

The city has a wealth of museums to cater for all tastes; amongst the highlights are the BMW Museum telling you all there is to know about the famous car company, the German Museum which encourages everyone to press buttons and interact with the exhibits for a really fun day out and the ‘Kartoffelmuseum’, or Potato Museum, for something a little different, exploring all aspects of the potato.

Parks and the Zoo

Munich Zoo contains a large range of animals living in naturalised habitats, as well as a children’s’ zoo and large aviary. The ‘Hirschgarten‘, in West Munich boasts the world’s largest beer garden with room for eight thousand drinkers, and is one of Munich’s most popular parks. For those feeling adventurous or voyeuristic you might want to visit the ‘Englischer Garten’; founded by Sir Benjamin Thompson, and permits nude sunbathing in certain areas, in addition to more modest attractions such as a Chinese pagoda.

Activities

One thing you might not expect in Munich is surfing, but the surfers on the ‘Eisbach’ have become a popular sight at the ‘Englischer Garten’. Mountain bikers might want to tackle the ‘Bombencrater’, a unique off road terrain on the southern edge of the city that was created by bombs dropped during WW2. If you prefer something a little more sedate however, you may want to try boating on the ‘Kleinhesseloher’
