Paro Valley - the Gateway of Bhutan Tourism

The picturesque Valley of Paro summarizes within itself a rich culture & tradition, glorious past, natural beauty and hundreds of myths and legends. It has played an important role in the history of Bhutan, officially called the Kingdom of Bhutan. It is home Bhutan’s only airport. There are several important buildings in this region including oldest temples, historical monuments, dzongs, Buddhist monasteries and National Museum. It also offers many delightful excursions for tourists. Thus it has been a much sought after tourist destination in the country and also considered to be the gateway of Bhutan tourism. National Museum & Ta Dzong

One of the main tourist attractions in Paro town is the National Museum. The museum is housed in Ta Dzong which is an ancient watchtower. The museum houses invaluable national heritage such as old coins, ancient costumes, old stamps, birds, ancient weapons, and lots of Bhutanese art & artifacts. There is the Philatellic Gallery near the top of the museum. It is also popular among tourists. It houses a rich collection of stamps.

Rinpung Dzong

Overlooking the Paro Town there is the Rinpung Dzong. It is a great place of tourist interest. It is an elegant and harmonious structure that offers spectacular view of the valley of Paro. Rinpung Dzong also controls the all kinds of social and religious activities in the valley. It is also the venue of Paro Tshechu, held once a year in the spring. One can approach the Dzong though a traditional covered bridge, called the Nemi Zam. When you will walk through the bridge you will see a superb view of the Dzong.

Drukgyel Dzong

Drukgyel Dzong, the Victorious Fortress, was built in the year of 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to celebrate his victory over the Tibetan invaders. It is one of the most important historical places to see in Paro. It also offers the commanding views of mountains on clear days.

Taktsang Monastery

Literally the Taktsang Monastery means the Tiger’s Nest. It is one of the most religious sites for the Bhutanese people. It is the place where Guru Rimponche medicated over thousands years ago. Thus it is one of the most famous pilgrimage places for Bhutanese or Buddhist followers. Every Bhutanese tries to visit this place at least once in a lifetime.

Apart from many magnificent architectural structures, Paro Valley is also renowned for its superb natural beauty. It is gateway of Bhutan tourism and tourists can go ahead to other destinations of the country.
