Railways are the most popular mode of transport for common masses in India. Railways have great connectivity through its extensive network. You can get railway reservations through IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited) website. For the same, you can visit irctc.co.in. You can check reservation status, train schedule, ticket availability, book tickets etc. After choosing the preferred railway which connects to your destination, you can book ticket online. In this website, after entering travel date, you can check the trains available between stations. The list of trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi will be shown with travel timings as well. You can choose among the different class available – AC First Class (1A), AC 2nd Class (2A), AC 3rd Class (3A), AC three tier (Economy) (3E), Sleeper Class (SL), AC Chair Car (CC), Seater Class (2S) etc. When you choose class, fare will be shown exclusive of taxes. Make a note of PNR number and transaction id for future references. In e-ticket, you can take print out of ticket and use it when boarding.
During the holiday season, train tickets are usually over booked. This is especially true in case of Rajdhani , Shatabdi express which are usually the first trains to get reserved. However a person can still book and he can get in RAC or waiting list. RAC is reservation against cancellation which provides seating facility only. This allows passenger to board train and travel. If booked tickets get cancelled, a person having reservation against cancellation can get confirmed ticket. After RAC, person can still book and his name will be in the waiting list. On cancellation of confirmed tickets, waiting list improves and possibility of getting a confirmed reservation improves. Tickets getting cancelled happen a lot and if waiting list is short, there are even chances that you can get confirmed ticket. The final option which you can take is to get tatkal tickets which can be reserved only within 2 days of travelling. The tatkal tickets have more fare than regular tickets since they are for those who are unable to get tickets and have to travel due to emergency.
