Unique Fiestas Celebrated in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza
Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza are the bigger islands of Balearic Islands. Each island sports its own ceremonial dances and music which are fast becoming a dying art if it is not handed down to the next generation of Balearic Islands.
There is a lot of music and dancing in any Balearic Islands folklore. The music is melodious to accompany the various ceremonial dances in each fiesta. Traditional dances can be in the form of primitive dances by today’s standard but these are a delight to watch as the outside world is not able to witness it elsewhere.
Mallorca fiestas
The largest of Balearic Islands is Mallorca; it holds several delightful fiestas from January till December to delight any tourist visiting it. There is the three Magi procession where children are given presents. January 20th brings on the San Sebastian festival with small fires all around Palma de Mallorca. February festivals have participants wearing colorful masks with plenty of merry making.
Easter week or Semana Santa comes in April with sobriety and festivity. The month of May brings on the re-enactment fighting festival between the Saracens and the islands’ inhabitants who warred against one another in the past. A lively and delightful Jazz Festival comes on in July while the Fiesta Joan Mas comes in the month of August to commemorate Saint Joan’s bravery against the pirate attacks.
November ushers in the Inca fiesta while December 31st is ushered out with the colorful “Festival of the Banner”.
Menorca fiestas
The more popular fiestas celebrated in Menorca is the Carnival of Mahón which is held in February and San Juan fiesta in June. These popular fiestas have been ancient traditions for over 600 years. There is the special presentation of horses and dressing up in medieval attire with pilgrimage tours incorporated into the festivity.
The Verbenas de San Juan fiesta is celebrated on Jun 29 with performances of regional dances and delightful regional music while the San Martin festival comes on quickly in July in the town of Mercadal. The Nuestra Señora de Gracia fiesta is held on 8th September in the capital, Mahón with a medieval flavor.
Ibiza fiestas
The more popular San Antonio Abad festival leads the year on January 17 in honor of the island’s patron, San Antonio. In May, the Santa Eulalia fiesta comes on in a most colorful procession of medieval attire and elaborately decorated horse coaches.
The Nostra Senyora des Neus fiesta on August 5th and the Reconquista fiesta on August 8th display the best of regional folklore.
A special sports and cultural performances fiesta is held on August 24th in San Antonio; this is called the San Bartolomé fiesta.
