Trekking the Spectacular Sights of Patagonia

By Gary Clail Subscribe to RSS | June 22nd 2012 | Views:

This mountainous and beautiful Patagonian region of South America is rarely featured in holiday programs. The sights of the southern Andes and surrounding area are spectacular and mostly untraveled with some parts still to be fully explored. The towering mountains of the Torres Del Paine in Chile typify the grandeur of this astonishing place. Consistently spectacular and diverse in its scenery the beadth of awe inspiring nature in Patagonia is exciting. The possibility of cruising to the Antarctic and being face to face with an ancient glacier attract the adventurous and daring traveler.

Patagonia is named after the original people of the region called the Tehuelche people, or 'Fierce People'. They tribe survived into the 19th century when they were overcome by the Argentian army. The astounding innate strength of the nature and wildlife there remain as a testament of the skills of the indigenous people.

The magnificent towers of the Torres Del Paine attract people from all over the world. The terrain is severe and the mountains stark against the unforgettable skies. All of this is experienced in the chill air of one of the world's top and yet little explored lands. Myths of giants and the history of the ancient people provide a fascinating background to these wondrous sights.

Adventure cruises in the Antarctic oceans mean travellers can see not only the Antarctic but also killer whales, elephant seals, and penguins. These endangered animals are precious to the ecosystem there. The chance to see them is a privileged one. There are other cruises up the coast of Chile to the mountainous edge of the continent but the pull of the South Pole takes courageous travelers. Opportunities for kayaking in the arctic water and traveling to Antarctic lands are not to be missed if at all possible. The ice is beautiful and the landscape stretches out before you, white and dangerous.

In Patagonia there is the possibility to trek across glaciers, seeing the ancient ice sheets up close and witness one of the most powerful of forces that have changed the shape of lands.

Trekking and cruising in this adventure filled and ancient land leave the travelers with treasured memories and stories to relate to friends and family for the rest of their lives. Ice, rock, bold blue skies and beautiful wildlife from condors and pumas to killer whales mean this land is majestic and definiteley worth exploring.
