Travel Guide to Torrevieja

By Sarah Thomason Subscribe to RSS | December 16th 2011 | Views:

Torrevieja is a coastal city that is located along the Costa Blanca in Alicante, Spain. It is also within close proximity to two huge lagoons namely the Laguna de Torrevieja and Laguan de la Mata. This unique location of Torrevieja gives it a microclimate that is both lush and one of a kind. This unique climate is the primary reason why the water in Laguna de Torrevieja has a pink hue. The cause of the pinkish color of the water is a very rare bacteria that thrives only in very unique climates such as that of Torrevieja.

Playa De La Mata

The main reason why tourists visit Torrevieja is to explore its beautiful beaches. The pristine beach extends as far as 14 kilometers along the coast. The Playa de la Mata is a beautiful beach in Torrevieja that is also very close to the Laguna de la Mata natural park. This is also considered to be the beach with the longest stretch of white sand with its 2 kilometre stretch of powdery white sand dunes. Here you will also find a beach promenade that offers a wide range of choices in restaurants and bars. The promenade is also the only way that you can access the beach.

Playa de Cabo Cervera

The beautiful beach of Playa de Cabo Cervera is located in the cape of Cervera. This is where you will find the Torre del More, an ancient watch tower that is still in use today. Now, it is used as viewing deck where tourists can enjoy an excellent view of the Santa Pola cape to the north and the Mar Menor coast to the south.

Playa del Cura

Playa del Cura is said to be the most popular beach in Torrevieja. The beach is filled with restaurants and bars where tourists can enjoy the local cuisine. One of the dishes that are a must-try in these restaurants is the Pulpo Seco which is a simple dish made from sun-dried squid that has been grilled and then drizzled with some lemon juice and olive oil just before serving. One of the popular drinks in the local bars is the Paloma which is a drink made by mixing aniseed liquor, a small amount of water and lots of ice.

Las Calas

If you are planning on spending a peaceful day at the beach then you should head to Las Calas. This is where you will find secluded beaches that are not crowded with tourists. This is also a favourite spot for local and tourist divers. You can spend a few hours diving and just enjoying the beautiful marine life underwater. You will get to see various kinds of fish and coral species underwater.
