Saving on travel
For most of us, planning a holiday to an international destination is a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, this does not mean that you have to spend all the money that you have earned on this one holiday. You can enjoy a good holiday as well as save on travel. Here are a few tips on how to save on travelling. This is hoping you have already decided on your dream destination.
Look for cheap airfares. Here is a secret that probably most do not know, but if you take an early morning or a late night flight, the airfare is far cheaper than peak hour travel airfare. Also, booking on weekends eats up a lot into your travel fund. For international flights, look for connecting flights that will cut down on your waiting time at airports. Some airlines give you a cheapfare if you go with their package deal which includes a hotel booking.
Travel light should be your mantra for cheap travel. Nowadays, airlines are charging for baggage in excess of one piece. If you travel with heavy baggage you will end up paying porters, for a taxi, and for hotels with lifts. A piece of baggage which can be carried by you will help you cut down these small expenses. Take the bare minimum you need on your travel especially in terms of clothing. Worst comes to worst, if you run out of certain items you can buy them locally, instead of lugging the weight around all over the place. If you hold an international driving license then the best thing would be to rent a car from the airport itself.
For those who are planning to travel alone, there are numerous budget motels, youth hostels or rest houses with bed and bath facilities where the rents are cheap when compared to hotels. Your main agenda is to enjoy the place and do a lot of sightseeing, so booking into an expensive accommodation which you will use only to rest and freshen up seems like a waste. For those who intend to stay for a long period of time at one place, they have the option of service apartments which are available at a discounted rate and have all the required facilities. They come with kitchenettes where you can prepare simple meals and have laundry facilities too.
Avoid eating at the hotel you are staying in especially if it is located in the central shopping area or uptown area. By eating at deli's and fast food restaurants, you can save a lot of your travelmoney and also enjoy the local cuisine in some holiday destinations at a cheaper price. Go to restaurants which are kid friendly and offer free meals to kids or at a discount. Some restaurants even allow for sharing of meals.
If your local stay includes using the public transport like trams and underground metro service, then buy passes for the entire length of your stay as this will end up being cheap for you. Students get special concessions when they use the public transport to travel, provided they produce their student identification cards.
