Morocco - Experience a fantastic mix of cultures

Morocco is a fascinating place thanks to its rich mix of African life and European charm. With a strong history and complex blend of old and new, it’s a perfect destination for a sunny winter getaway.

Marrakech is perhaps the most well-known of Morocco’s cities, as it’s the main tourist area in the south of the country, making it a perfect choice for an overseas break. A busy city, Marrakech is made up of a traditional Medina and a more modern new town area.

Head to Marrakech for your trip abroad if you like the sound of embracing a whole new way of life amongst the city’s many souks and hammams.

Place Jemaa el Fna square is a must-see during your trip overseas. It’s a sight you’ll recognise from all the tourist guides and understandably so. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week you’re guaranteed to find local acrobats, musicians and snake charmers entertaining you amongst the market stalls. Don’t get too distracted by the entertainers that you miss the market stalls though! Be sure to make the most of your holiday by sampling some of the delicious local delicacies on offer.

Fes was Morocco’s capital before Marrakech, and is the oldest of the country’s imperial cities. Amongst the resort’s city walls sits Old Fes, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a fascinating glimpse into the history of the area. A day spent wandering the 9,000 streets of Old Fes during your holiday provides a chance to really get to grips with the mix of cultures found in Morocco.

If you prefer the idea of being by the coast, then give Agadir a try for some winter sun. Surrounded by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, it has been extensively rebuilt after an earthquake and now offers a modern resort with a traditional feel. This is best shown in the Medina d’Agadir, a reproduction of a traditional medina which, although modern, still provides the perfect historical atmosphere.

Agadir is great for those wanting a beach break with lots of culture. Eating out, you can sample the range of dishes available to Moroccans– including a rich blend of North African and European fare.

With year-round sunshine Morocco is a great destination for winter sun holidays. Marrakech, Agadir and Fes are all suitable for anyone who’s looking for a trip abroad during the winter months. They may not be seen as your traditional sunshine beach breaks but with a combination of brilliant weather, interesting sights and a rich culture - what's not to like?
