Gibraltar the Rock in the Spanish Shoe
Located in the south coast of Spain, right at the door of the Mediterranean Sea, this Rock or mountain stands defiant facing the Mediterranean Sea.
Although located geographically in Spain, this city is a territory of the UK and consequently its citizens are British and speak English.
Tourism in Gibraltar is geared towards honeymooners and romantic escapades. Perhaps it is the warm Mediterranean climate or its special location so close to Africa that make Gibraltar such a romantic place to visit.
A Place Geared for Honeymooners
Getting married in Gibraltar is much easier than in Spain and this is why many people elope to this territory. Excellent wedding services, church or registry weddings, the many hotels and cafes are what attract couples from all Europe.
Those who get married in Gibraltar have the option of spending their honeymoon in Spain or in Morocco. A high speed boat takes you to Tangier in only 45 minutes across the Straits of Gibraltar. Dolphins and whales can frequently be spotted in the Bay and boat tours can be arranged.
There is a teleferic or cable car that takes the visitor to the top of the Rock, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Gibraltar, Spain and the coast of North Africa on a clear day.
The Alameda holds a very nice Botanical Garden with all kinds of trees and flowers. There are waterfalls and ponds in the gardens that provide a romantic ambiance.
The Rock of Gibraltar
A very strategic location, the Rock was used during WW I and WW II as a military base.
Over 150 caves exist inside the Rock of Gibraltar. The best known is St. Michael's Cave, full of stalagmites and stalactites, as well as a crystal-clear underground lake. The natural echo properties of this cave make it a natural and very effective auditorium and many concerts are held underground. There is no need of air con, as the temperature in the cave is naturally cooler than that outside.
Located in the North of the city of Madrid and very close to Castellana Promenade and the Palace of Congress, right in the center of the busy financial district, lies Orense Street. This street is packed with galleries, business and small shops and always seems to be busy with shoppers. It is also very popular amongst the business workers, who have their lunch breaks in its many cafes and fast food restaurants and try to sneak in some shopping.
There is a rare species of macaque only found in this area of the world, the Gibraltar Ape. They can still be seen at liberty, jumping off trees in the forested peak of the mountain. For the convenience of the many visitors who would like to see them, some Gibraltar apes are held in captivity in a small zoo.
Restaurants offer British and Spanish cuisine alike, besides good beer and excellent wines.
