Four Special Places you should visit in Alicante
La Marina de Alicante
This is a popular but quiet area near Alicante, where locals and foreigners can enjoy fresh seafood caught by the local fishermen in the blue Mediterranean coastal waters. Big paellas with mussels and shrimps, calamari, chicken or rabbit, are seen on many restaurant tables to the delight of old and young. There aren´t many hotels in la Marina, but one can find many villas and apartments there for rent.
The Romeria de la Santa Faz
Around 200,000 people attend this pilgrimage every year, gathering early in the morning at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral in the center of Alicante, to walk over eight kilometers to the Santa Faz Monastery. This monastery keeps locked under four keys, the remnants of Veronica´s veil, with which she wiped Jesus´s blood from His face when He was carrying the cross. Local tradition says that in the 15th century there was a terrible drought and the believers, mostly farmers, got together in this monastery to pray for rain. A tear appeared in the image of Jesus and then rain started to fall over the land.
Visiting the Island of Tabarca
History tells us that the Moors of Argelia conquered the island and took all its Genovian residents to North Africa. Charles III paid for their rescue and they were liberated. A fortress was built in the island to prevent the frequent pirate attacks against the Costa Blanca. Nowadays, it’s a 1400 hectare protected Marine Reserve, where people can enjoy snorkeling and watching its rich marine fauna and flora. Local restaurants offer the typical Caldero consisting of fish stew in a deep metal kettle or pan. Dishes like roasted sardines, pulpitos en su tinta, or fresh fried fish can be enjoyed on any outdoor terrace facing the sea.
Wild Vergel´s Safari Park
If you enjoy nature, adventure and wildlife, this is the place to go. El Vergel Safari Park, close to the town of Ondara, presents a great variety of wild animals that roam around freely in its big fenced fields. Lions, tigers, leopards, monkeys, zebras, deer and wolves roam free. It is totally forbidden to get out of the car, for obvious reasons, yet people have managed to get killed by opening the windows or even getting out of the car to take better pictures of the sleepy-looking lions. If you stay inside the car, you can take pictures and be safe and enjoy the safari. It’s really up to you!
