Cordoba is a city located in the south of Spain. It is a famous destination among tourists from all over the world. Cordoba also has a richly embedded history which is also one of the reasons why tourists flock to the city. It may be a historical city but it is also a modern city that has an amazing nightlife, great shopping districts and a wide selection of restaurants serving sumptuous Spanish and international cuisine.

Cordoba is also a melting pot of different cultures. The history and culture of Cordoba is a combination of influences from the Muslims, Jews and Romans. The influences from these different cultures are displayed in the architecture especially the historic monuments in Cordoba.

The Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos is one of the famous landmarks in Cordoba. It is one of the monuments in Cordoba that receives the most number of visitors each day. This famous landmark is made up of beautiful gardens, a palace and a fortress. It was also declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was originally a caliphate residence and was built during the 8th century. Through the centuries the famous landmark has undergone several renovations which all made it the beautiful monument that it is at present. During the reign of Alfonso XI in 1328, he ordered the construction of the palace buildings. A few years after the palace was built, the Alcazar became the court of the Christian monarchs for 160 years. Also part of the rich history of the Alcazar is the historical event when Christopher Columbus arranged for a meeting with the monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella to present his plans on finding a route to India.

Another monument in Cordoba that is also a UNESCO World Heritage site is the Mezquita of Cordoba. It is also considered to be one of the most famous mosques in the world. The Mezquita was built in the 10th century, during the time when Cordoba was at the peak of its power among the European cities. At that time the city of Cordoba was still under the Islamic rule. It was only in 1236 that King Ferdinand III reinstated Christianity after he conquered the city from the rule of the Moors. Under the rule of the Christian monarchs, a few improvements were done on the Mezquita. During the reign of King Alfonso X, the Royal Chapel and the Villaviciosa Chapel was built inside the Mezquita. The Mezquita has a unique combination of influences from both the Christians and the Muslims.

These are just a few of the famous monuments in Cordoba, Spain and there are a lot more beautiful monuments to see in the city.
