This interesting town in the province of Alicante in Spain, is located so close to the coast that in only a few minutes’ drive you can access 20 km of beautiful fine sand beaches. Orihuela enjoys warm temperate Mediterranean weather during the whole year.

Historical Heritage of Orihuela

This town was originally founded by the fierce Carthaginians and named Orcelis. When the Visigoths took over, it became the capital of the province of Aurariola. This town was reconstructed by the Moors during their 800 years occupation of Spain. The Muslim Emirate of Cordoba ruled over Orihuela. Thanks to the excellent irrigation and agricultural systems implemented by the Moors in Orihuela, it was ensured that the crops grew even when the rain was scarce.

The River Segura provides water to the region, and all around Orihuela we can see olive trees, orange orchards, almond trees and vast cotton plantations. In the north of Orihuela lies the gorgeous Palmeral, a real oasis with palm trees which can be counted by the thousands. It is formed in the typical Muslim half moon shape.

Sacred Art and Monuments to Visit in Orihuela

Many buildings and monuments testify to the various invasions and their effect on Orihuela.

The principal one is the Cathedral of Orihuela, built over the ruins of an old mosque about 10 centuries ago. Retaining its Gothic foundation, it was remodeled in classic Baroque during the 1500s.

Other religious buildings to visit are the Iglesia de Santa Justa and the Iglesia de Santiago.

Beautiful palaces grace the city with their intricate ornamental work. Amongst them we can visit Palacio del Conde de Pinohermoso, Palacio del Marques de Rafal, Palacio de Rubalcalva and other rich mansions of the era, with their arcades, balconies and interior patios with full gardens. One of the palaces in Orihuela has been remodeled and now houses the Hotel Tudemir.

History tells us that the Moors of Argelia conquered the island and took all its Genovian residents to North Africa. Charles III paid for their rescue and they were liberated. A fortress was built in the island to prevent the frequent pirate attacks against the Costa Blanca. Nowadays, it’s a 1400 hectare protected Marine Reserve, where people can enjoy snorkeling and watching its rich marine fauna and flora. Local restaurants offer the typical Caldero consisting of fish stew in a deep metal kettle or pan. Dishes like roasted sardines, pulpitos en su tinta, or fresh fried fish can be enjoyed on any outdoor terrace facing the sea.

The Home Town of the Poet

The famous Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez was born in Orihuela and died in jail in mid-twentieth century. His family’s home has been transformed into a museum where his books, art and diaries are exposed to the public. The whole building has been preserved and portrays the look of the houses during the beginning of the 20th century.

If you visit Orihuela during Easter, you will be able to attend the Semana Santa celebrations and learn a whole lot more about the town’s traditions and history.
