Exploring Tallinn: Estonia’s Beautiful Capital

By Sean Burke Subscribe to RSS | May 11th 2012 | Views:

There are plenty of breathtaking capital cities in the world – Canberra, Vienna and London to name just three. But have you ever heard of Tallinn? Not all capital cities are well known, as this one proves. But just because Tallinn – the capital of Estonia – is not immediately known to many people, it doesn’t mean it is not worthy of a visit. In fact, as you will see, there are plenty of reasons why you should consider Tallinn as the ideal place for a city break.

So what can you look forward to seeing when you stay in Tallinn? One of the main sights many people head for is the Old Town. This has been given World Heritage Site Status by UNESCO, and it dates back many hundreds of years. When you see it for yourself you may understand why the Old Town has often been spoken of as a mini version of Prague. It is just as beautiful with its cobbled streets and gothic spires. In fact, you may feel as if you have walked into the past when you visit the Old Town for yourself.

But this is just a small section of everything the city has to offer. If your trip to Tallinn has been planned as a family holiday, you can look forward to visiting Tallinn Zoo for the day. It is famed for its mountain goats and you can also see many different birds of prey, snow leopards and even a red river hog. The kids will no doubt enjoy the petting zoo too.

Every city has its landmarks that are famous for defining the skyline above it. Tallinn is no different in this respect, since it has a famous church called St Olav’s Church. It dates back to the 14th century and boasts a tower that is quite stunning, not to mention tall. Its spire reaches some 124 metres into the sky, which makes it easy to spot no matter where you are in the city. If you visit Tallinn from April to October, you can head up to the top of the tower to see out across the city. Be sure to take your camera so you can capture the stunning views to relive later.

It’s also well worth seeing the Rotermann Quarter, which you will find sandwiched between the Old Town and the harbour. This used to be an area of factories that was avoided some years ago. But now it has been taken over and had new life breathed into it. There are shops here and there is also a main square. You can also stop for sustenance in one of the restaurants.

Whichever hotel Tallinn that you stay in, you can be sure of being close to all the best sights in this beautiful city.
