Do you know what an electromagnet is? If not, then let me tell you that it is one kind of magnet which produces a magnetic field when electric current is passed through it. The greatest benefit of Electromagnet over normal magnet is that the former can be magnetized by passing electric current through it and it will lose its magnetism immediately when the current is switched off. Since the strength of the magnetic field can be controlled with ease, electromagnets are used in various technological as well as medical fields. To know more about their uses, quickly glance through.

Unlike in the yesteryears, today, there are several uses of electromagnets. Some of them include the following.

• Technological Uses: Electromagnets are used not only for storing information but also for moving things. You will find the use of electromagnets in locks which are magnetic, electric balls, tape recorders, loudspeakers, mobile phones, telephones, computer disks, and so on. Electromagnets are also used in televisions in order to power the cathode ray tube for regulating the direction of electrons which are used for illuminating the screen. Moving metals from one place to another is one of the most popular uses of electromagnets. What else? Electromagnets are also used by spacecrafts in the propulsion system for generating power.

• Medical Uses: In the medical field, electromagnets are used for taking out the magnetic metal particles from inside your eyes which usually gets deposited as a result of an accident. These electromagnets are also used by hospitals in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). MRI helps in getting detailed image of the inside portion of an individual’s body and this in turn helps in diagnosing several diseases.

These are some of the most popular uses of electromagnets. Today, a lot of research work is being done by students as well as scientists in order to find out the other possible uses of electromagnets.
