Diamond Milling Process- an Insight

By Julia Roger Subscribe to RSS | December 6th 2011 | Views:

Diamond Milling is a very interesting system of creating micro structures in various sizes and shapes. It is interesting because you can create your own shapes if desire through Diamond Milling, be it binary or free forms or any other form. Diamond Milling is one the most important technology specially used for custom micro optics or fabricating injection mold in micro optics. The difference between Diamond Milling and conventional milling is in later system the shapes created are large in size, though in both the cases the procedure is more or less the same.

The process of Diamond milling involves very low tooling cost. The bits for diamond milling are available at a very cheap rate. Apart from the cost, of the bit, another cost is the time cost on which rests the roughness desired on the surface.. Glass is a quite tough material and for cutting glass or milling the same diamond bits are best suited. In case of plastics, you have to be careful about the heat generated at the time of milling..

Normally for small millings, small, precise, single piece diamond tool is required. The milling tools have flat tips where as drilling tools has extra facet. Normally for diamond turning process lathes or turn mills are used the tip bit is diamond which can be natural or synthetic. The diamond turning is primarily being done to manufacture optical elements from crystal which are used in telescope, video projectors lasers and in many other research projects which have specialized instrument or device. Single point diamond turning is done through computerized machine tools. Other uses of diamonds are milling and grinding. Whereas, for diamond milling machines include lathes, radial arm drills, punch presses, power shears and both horizontal and vertical milling machines. In earlier days, the Diamond Milling used be done in one machine only which was horizontal milling machine..
