A Short Note on Crossbows

By James Blee Subscribe to RSS | December 22nd 2011 | Views:

A crossbow is a traditional weapon used as a weapon in wars in the past. However, with passage of time and subsequent advancement of science and technology, the newer forms of modern ammunitions have replaced these older forms of weapons. Nowadays, crossbows are mostly used by the hunters to shoot projectiles, also called bolts at a drawn target. The weapon comprises of a bow placed on an elastic stock that can be elongated to hold the bow in a fully drawn position. On releasing the bow by pressing the trigger, the bow travels at a rapid pace and hits the target.

The crossbows are mainly classified in terms of their size, energy, acceleration system and degree of projectiles and automation. Primarily they are classified into three major sub domains in the forms of straight, reserve and multiple bows.

Straight – They have the simplest of acceleration systems and are most primitive categories of weapons that were used for open warfare.

Recurve- These are pre fabricated with tips that are made to curve away resulting in a longer extension length and a better acceleration of the marked projectile. They, however, exert a greater pressure on the material of the bow and make a fair bit of noise on firing which might not be good for hunting prospects especially if you are firing from a shorter range.

Multiple- This is the most developed category of crossbows that are capable of pulling using multiple bows. To make it simple, it is a sort of a compound structure that is used in tandem with a face system thereby resulting in a much faster string speed. This is in fact an innovated design of the compound bows that too came with similar specifications but lacked in terms of durability and drawing length which led to subsequent modifications followed by the launch of multiple bows that overcome these drawbacks.
