Are You making Mistakes? the Dos and Donts of SEO
Search Engine Optimization can be tricky. Get it wrong, and search engines will punish you, or at best, you'll languish in the land of the forgotten. Get it right, and you could garner all the traffic you're hoping for.
Getting it right, however, takes a good bit of time and effort. It's very tempting to go for the quick fix, or the easy solution. If you do, just remind yourself what Google can do. Yanking sites because they've violated certain “rules” of the SEO world is a reality.
First, let's talk about what you should not be doing. Don't take shortcuts. Search engines reward relevancy, fresh content, and popularity. Achieving those attributes through short-cuts is like cheating. If you get caught, it could be bad news for you.
Here are 3 shortcuts to avoid according to practicalecommerce. There are others, but these are common mistakes.
Buying Links: Search algorithms look for quality links to your site. Buy them from a link farm or link exchange and it's like buying votes. Google has developed a way to sniff these out, so get them the old-fashioned way – earn them. Yes, it takes longer, and requires more effort, but there's no risk involved.
Fake profiles: Creating a fake profile, or a small site or social profile can be detected by search engines. This is where companies will create a mass of social profiles, or smaller blogs that all link back to the same site. Again, not a quality move.
Low-value linking: This is considered a short-cut as well. Off-topic directories, thin articles on article submission sites, low-news-value press releases are all considered as low-value. These basic strategies alone aren't all bad, but if you want to generate quality traffic – write good content articles and only put out press releases with news value.
What to do -3 basics
Select keywords that will direct users to you without being misleading. Narrow to the most specific words people would be using to search for your type of offering.
Have an optimal title for search:
• Make it unique, no two pages of your site should have the same title.
• Make it a meaningful sentence of roughly 65 characters.
• Include the keyword in the title that the page focuses on.
Create a description to appear below the title on search pages that supports what you assert in your title:
• It should be about 150-160 characters long.
• It should contain the keyword.
• It should be informative and interesting.
• It should be a summary of the page.
Good URL structure:
• A few words, no numbers.
• Not too long.
• Use specific keywords or each page (home, contact, shop – not page 1, page 2 etc....)
The other thing you can do to achieve the search engine optimization results you want are to create valuable, regular content. Generate something useful, then spread it through legitimate channels. Earn links through social media and blog mentions because you're relevant, interesting, and valuable. Be the company that deserves a high ranking. Blog, update your site, and be patient.
Good things come to those who wait... and who work. Taking the shortcut could get immediate results, but ultimately will set you back.
