Every so often, your dog will likely become constipated. If you see that your dog is frequently constipated though, it's best to get him checked out as there may be something more serious troubling him. When your dog gets constipated, he will be very uncomfortable just like you would.

Your dog can be affected by constipation for a number of different reasons. If your dog isn't getting enough fiber in his diet, constipation can easily occur. Dehydrated dogs are also subject to becoming constipated. Dogs routinely eat things they're not supposed to which is another way constipation can become a problem. It is not uncommon for dogs to eat things they're not supposed to.

Your dog may become constipated if he doesn't get enough exercise. The risk of developing constipation also increases in dogs that are too stressed out. The colon's pathway can also become blocked if the prostate gland becomes enlarged. Older dogs routinely develop this problem.

Dogs will struggle to pass stool whenever they're constipated. Some dogs that are constipated won't even pass any stool at all. Any feces that is produced will likely be small and hard. Owners that have dogs that deal with chronic constipation should make a trip to the vet to see what the problem is. If you see that your dog's stool has blood in it, then you should take him to the vet too. The vet may try giving your dog an enema or a laxative. Intravenous fluids may be necessary if your dog becomes dehydrated.

Dog owners should try to use various methods to keep their pets free of this condition. Keep in mind that your dog will need plenty of fiber in his diet, and also he will need to eat high-quality dog food.
