Naples Things to Do

Naples is an interesting city to wander about in. The contrast between the elegant streets of Chiaia and the grubby, crowded, narrow alleys of the city’s centre is enormous. There is a lot to see and do here, most within easy reach of the hotels in Naples City Centre.

Historic Buildings

Visible from all over the city thanks to its enormous campanile (bell tower) which is the tallest in Naples, the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine was reputedly funded by Corradino of Swabia’s mother who had the church built in his memory. Every July, a spectacular firework display is set off from the campanile. The Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo and the Basilica di Santa Chiara are both found on the Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, which is one of the prettiest squares in Naples as well as one of its liveliest. The Chiesa was originally the palazzo of Ferrante Sansevirino, a wealthy merchant, who built it in the 15th Century. High up in the hills above Naples town centre sits the Certosa di San Martino, which was originally built as a monastery in the 14th Century. Having undergone numerous facelifts during the 16th and 17th Centuries, this is a fascinating place to see the layers of architectural style overlaying one another. Home to the Museo Nazionale di San Martino, the church also houses a fine collection of paintings and frescoes by some of Naples’ most celebrated artists.

Food and Drink

Naples is famously the home of the pizza and there are two restaurants that all visitors must visit to enjoy the true flavour of the city. The first of these is Da Michele, which looks like nothing much from the outside, but serves the most sublime pizza you will ever taste in only two varieties – margherita and marinara. For a little more variety, the Lombardi a Santa Chiara serves the freshest seafood alongside the traditional pizzas and pastas.
