Ultimately, how a diamond cutter cuts it to make the new diamond determines the diamonds beauty and brilliance. The quality of a diamond depends on four factors: color, clarity, carat and cut, also known as the 4Cs. When a diamond crystal comes from the ground, the brilliance, fire, and scintillation that constitute the unique beauty of a polished diamond are still locked within it.

Types of Diamond Cuts

Cushion cut diamonds vary in proportion and there is no real standard for what the proportions of a cushion cut diamond should be. Because of this, the quality of the diamond cutting can have a big impact on how beautiful the diamond appears.

The Asscher diamond cut is a square cut with 72 facets in it. The deep clipped corners make the diamond resemble an octagon. The modern patented Asscher cut diamonds have more facets, and smaller clipped corners, but are no less exquisite.

Marquise diamonds, like oval diamonds, can suffer from a bow-tie effect. They are classified as “fancy cut” diamonds. They are cut in a very similar fashion to the round brilliant diamonds. They have the same amount of facets as the round brilliant cut diamonds.

Oval diamonds have what is known as a “bow-tie” effect. This is a dark spot in the middle of the diamond. Generally, there will be two of these spots which together look like a bow tie. A diamond cutter will try to eliminate this as much as possible, but it is often impossible to completely erase.

The pear shaped diamond is actually a combination of the round brilliant cut and a Marquise cut. The reason it is usually cut into this shape is to retain its maximum weight.

Compared to a brilliant cut, an Emerald cut stone is not fiery or bright due to a shallower crown and pavilion. The cut is designed to show off a diamonds clarity, luster, and whiteness.

Round brilliant cut diamonds are considered the classic traditional cut. Nowadays, round brilliant cut diamonds have 58 facets. There are 33 facets in the crown and 25 in the pavilion. Modern brilliant diamonds also contain facets on the girdle, sometimes as many as 96.

The Princess is a style for cutting square and rectangular stones to gain the maximum fire and brilliance by adding extra and improved faceting. Princess cuts are becoming more available and more popular as well.
