Low Back Pain in Older People
Low back pain has become common problem in United States in all age group people. Along with youngsters, low back pain has also become common problems for older people who are 60 years or more than 60 years old. One of the most common type of pain occurs in the older people is the pain that is worse in the morning and later in the evening usually caused by facet joint osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis). This is the condition that involves breakdown of the cartilage between the facet joints in the back. The pain and stiffness is a result of the lack of the cartilage between the joints.
The other kind of pain occur in the older people is the pain down the legs during standing upright and walking. This kind of pain is called sciatica and it occurs during walk and increases with more walking. It can be caused by conditions such as degenerative spondylolisthesis or lumbar spinal stenosis. In both conditions, pressure is exerted on the nerves at the point where they exit the spine. Standing upright, such as in normal walking increases pressure on the nerve which results in leg pain. These are some common back pain problems that occur in the older people but there are many other reasons which are responsible for it.
Pain arising from abnormalities of organs within the pelvis, chest or abdomen may also be felt in the back. This kind of pain is known as referred pain. Kidney diseases, bladder infections, ovarian disorders, kidney infections, aneurysms along with many other disorders within abdomen may cause pain referred to the back. In women, back pain may be occur due to normal pregnancy in many ways such as irritating nerves, straining the lower back or stretching ligaments within the pelvis region. Back pain can have many reasons but often there is no any specific reason that can be found to stop the pain.
There are many causes of these kinds of pain and you should clearly specify your symptoms from the scratch to your medical consultant. This will help them to identify the appropriate reason and give the proper treatment accordingly. Many people use to ignore back pain at the start which may be worse later. Hence, if you find any kinds of pain for more than one week, it’s recommended to consult to a doctor at the earliest. In earlier stage, they can give you proper treatment without being it serious.
