How will the spending cuts affect those who offer learning disability services?
Many people with disabilities as well as their families and friends are worried that the huge spending cuts facing most local authorities may result in them losing out on support. Many want to find out what their learning disability services are trying to do to ensure that these cuts won’t fail those who need support and what they can do themselves.
Organisations need to work closely with local authorities across the country to try and negotiate the best possible deal for the people that they support. They are also working to secure the long term future of support for people with disabilities, by providing evidence to the Commission on Social Care Funding. Those who offer learning disability services believe that they have the right to independently live their lives, with all the support that they need. The main goal here is to make sure the Government provides enough money for these services, so that people with disabilities have the same choices and opportunities as everyone else.
Some organisations have chosen to speak out in national newspapers and on their own websites to highlight the difficulties they are facing and the long term impact that these cuts will have on the people they support. Many have firmly and publicly opposed the unfair removal of the DLA mobility component. The Learning Disability Coalition in particular have spearheaded a vigorous “Protect The Frontline” campaign, contacting MPs and local newspapers across the country.
There are a few different ways you can help and if you would like to do more as an individual. The Learning Disability Coalition website offer a number of ways to take action and get your voices heard.
Mencap’s Big Cuts events, which are running over the next three months offering a great opportunity for those who suffer from learning disabilities or who work in the care industry to have their say. It will bring together people from across the learning disability community and allow them to discuss the cuts in their local area.
