How You Can Avoid Laptop Overheating Problem

By Carleen James Subscribe to RSS | March 28th 2012 | Views:

Though laptops are adequately advanced and modified today, overheating is still a problem with them. In fact, that’s what can’t be completely gotten rid of. We can, however, prevent overheating to some extent and lessen the impact. First it is essential to find out what causes overheating and how it happens, in order to be able to prevent it.

You can easily come to know your laptop is overheated when its fan is running at maximum speed. Then it begins to process slowly as the CPU wants to cut back its speed to escape heat pressure. When heating reaches the highest point, safety software attempts to shutdown the system to prevent any damage.

The major reason of overheating is dust-clogged fan and blocked exhaust ports. Sometimes, degeneration of thermal grease between the heat sink and the CPU is responsible for overheating. Such problems don’t always need professional laptop repair, and you can handle it by doing maintenance on time to time basis. What you can do:

Take care of internal cooling

Your laptop is hot to touch from outside but the actual problem is inside, and you have to start from right there. It is most important to open and clean the fan which mainly keeps the CPU and graphics card cool. As you once clean these internal parts and time passes, dust forms layers on them to block air flow. This is how it slows them down again and you need to open your laptop to repeat cleaning.

Be careful and first learn to properly open you’re the parts to enable easy and safe notebook repair. Shut down the laptop, remove the battery and unplug power strips every time you want to do cleaning. Take cotton roles to clean the fan and you can use drops of alcohol for easy removal of dirt layer. You can use vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the fan and exhaust ports.

Keep the laptop on hard substratum and get a laptop cooler

The next step of your self laptop repair is to know which surface is fine to keep the laptop and which not. Normally, laptops take in cool air from underneath. When you keep your notebook on your lap, quilt or pillow (that are uneven surfaces), you resist the flow of air. Heat develops in the absence of sufficient cooling air. Even the temperature of already sucked in air increases which causes overheating. That is why you need to keep your laptop on hard and flat surface.

It is always useful to get a laptop cooler that is meant to provide additional cooling. You need, however, to choose a cooler in accordance with the design of the laptop. For instance if your laptop has intake grills at the bottom, get a cooler that blows cool air upwards.

A laptop repair at home is not that big a deal. You just need to develop a routine to regularly take care of main parts of the laptop. You can get required accessories to make things more convenient for you.
