Why do you need a suit?

The tailored suit has long been a part of the working man's wardrobe. The rise of the suit began in the 19th century, during the British 'Regency' period and has since been adapted throughout time, with the influence of various cultures.

When choosing a suit, the focus should mostly be on its silhouette and fit. The garment should have balanced shoulders so that it is comfortable whether open or closed, and the neck and chest should be expertly fitted to ensure that the fabric doesn't drape or wrinkle with movement.

There are many different kinds of suit to choose from too. Some men prefer single-breasted jackets, which typically have one row of three buttons and a narrow strip of overlapping fabric. Alternatively, the double-breasted suit is comprised of a wider overlapping strip and two rows of buttons, often these have wider lapels too.

The traditional suit is generally comprised of a jacket and trousers, but three-piece suits have become ever more popular in recent years. Many modern men are choosing to wear the traditional three-piece suit, which consists of a jacket, trousers and waistcoat. Rarely worn today, the morning jacket or tail coat was once worn when men embarked upon a morning of horseback riding. Now, however, the morning jacket is quite often only seen during formal wedding celebrations.

There are many ways you can take your suit from day to night by introducing various accessories, such as a regular tie with a Windsor knot for work during the day, a neat bow tie for evening wear, and a cravat for weddings and special events. Wearing a tie with your favourite suit is also a great way to introduce a splash of colour.

With so many suits for men on the market, it can be hard to know where to start. One of the best ways to find that perfect suit is to simply try as many on as possible. Even if devoting an entire day to suit-shopping doesn't sound like your idea of a good time, purchasing a stylish new suit will feel very rewarding. When trying on a suit, walk around in it for a bit and see what it feels like when you sit down. You want to be sure you find one that fits perfectly.

Since buying a suit is such an important wardrobe investment, it's essential that you are confident in the silhouette you choose. By picking a classic style, you can be sure that it won't fall out of fashion over the years. However, choosing a trendy suit, such as a slim-fit jacket and skinny trousers or a jacket with a velvet-lined lapel, will make more of a fashion statement. Thus, to truly cover all bases, saving up for two suits (one trendy and one classic) may not be a bad idea.
