You don’t always need new lenses.

These simple tips and products will save you hundreds of dollars by allowing you to repair your own lenses at home.

Eyeglasses are prone to scratches and other damage. Even for people who handle their glasses with the upmost care, scratches happen. Lenses are very delicate and within a year are likely to get damaged. You can’t go around wearing scratched glasses. This can lead to unclear vision and overtime can further increase your eye problems. You just want to give up and buy new ones. That’s not necessary. It is also not necessary to go to the optometrist every time your glasses get scratched. They will repair them, but will charge you a hefty fee. Save the time. Save the money. These simple steps can help you repair your lenses and keep them looking great.

Some lenses come with a warranty so if your glasses are still under that warranty simply take them back to the optician. Repairing your lenses on your own while they are still under warranty may void the conditions. If you can get someone to repair them for free, why not just do that? If you don’t know if your lenses are under warranty, call your optician. They should have that information readily available.

If you wear eyeglasseswith polycarbonate or glass lenses, there are a few simple repairs you can do to make sure they are free of scratches. Simple household products are great for repairing these types of lenses but products on the market like Liquid Lens and CPR Lens Scratch Repair work well. These products are specifically designed to fill in the gaps left by deep and small scratches. They often come with the full kit needed to properly clean and dry your lenses. This should include individual scratch tools, the liquid glass itself and a cleaning cloth.

If you are looking for a fast and easy way to repair you lens and don’t want to spend the time or money getting a lens repair kit, you can use toothpaste. Take a pea-sized amount of your regular toothpaste and apply it on the lens. Use a clean, soft cotton cloth to rub the toothpaste into the scratches. Leave it on for about 10 minutes. Take another clean soft cotton cloth and dampen it with cold water. This will be used to clean the toothpaste off the lens. Once the toothpaste is removed, take a third piece of cloth and dry off the lens. Hold the lenses up to a light to check if all the scratches are gone and repeat if not.

For plastic lenses, repair isn’t much different. Use the following methods and you’ll notice a huge difference in your vision. Start by cleaning the lens thoroughly. You can use a damp cloth or run them under water. Use your general cleaning kit or method to properly clean the glasses before starting the next step. Once the glasses are completely clean grab a dry, soft cloth and etching cream. Use a cotton swab to distribute the etching cream over the lens. Make sure the cream covers all the scratches of both lenses, on both sides. This will offer faster and better results. Take the clean, cotton cloth and dampen it with cold water. Use this to clean the lens thoroughly. Etching cream can be found at your local arts or general store. Etching cream is used to create unique designs on glass windows but can also be used as a filling compound fro scratched and damaged glass.

The last thing you can do is to buy a repair kit. These are simple and light weight kits that come with everything you need to keep your glasses looking and functioning great. They come with lens repair formulas to fix scratches, a screw driver, replacement screws, nosepieces and cloth.

Eyeglass repair is not an easy task. Make sure you take your time in following these steps for maximum results. Check your glasses and do it again if it doesn’t work. After a few times, if your glasses are not repaired it is best to replace the lenses. The last thing you want to do is put your life or career in danger because of your scratched glasses. This can also severely impact your overall vision correction.

Although there are many different myths about repairing scratches, these are proven methods that have worked for years. Both toothpaste and etching cream offer the proper formulas for filling in gaps left due to scratches and dents. They work chemically with the lens to make your glasses look like new. With the proper care, you can make your lenses last longer than ever before.
