How does smtp server work in delivery of your emails?
It is imperative to mention that internet these days have become an integral part of our lives no matter what age group we belong too. Internet is undoubtedly the most popular medium of online communication apart from being the most reliable information source. Now it is very difficult to think of life without the internet.
As mentioned earlier, communication has become extremely quick with the help of internet. This also means sending and receiving of emails happen within the blink of your eye. But have you ever wondered how can such quick communication happen at such nanosecond’s time? Well, there is an extremely interesting technology that works behind such quick communications and it is done with the help of the smtp server.
Any form of communication via the internet happens with the client server connectivity. When you send an email to a recipient, the system connects you to the smtp which is located at a centralized location and is responsible for managing some specific function. Now this server passes the email to another smtp server of the recipient so as to send the email to the mailbox. The server than located the DNS address of the recipient and delivers the mail at the correct destination.
The domain is nothing but the unique web address that is also known as the Internet Protocol address. A link between the matching domains and the IP address is stored in the domain name registry. The smtp server connects with the DNS and sends the address to it. Once it matches the entry at the DNS, the server transfers the email to the IMAP or the POP3 server. These servers are responsible for storing the emails unless the user and the recipient logs in with his unique user name and password to check the mails in the inbox.
This may sound simple, but is rather complicated and takes quite some time to complete the entire process. But the time taken by the entire process is so less in terms of human mind, that we get to see that the emails are delivered almost immediately. Thus this is how quick communication is possible with the help of smtp. It is now used by many business houses to opt for the email marketing as a form of advertising campaign as well. With the help of such smtp, business houses are able to send bulk emails to their huge customer base and promote their business.
