San Diego Students: Major in Psychology

By William Hauselberg Subscribe to RSS | August 6th 2012 | Views:

Students at San Diego universities have the choice to major in a myriad of academic fields. When pursuing an undergraduate degree, settling on a major can be very hard. Many students are not sure what they are interested in or how studying in a certain program might benefit them.

Many students who find picking a major difficult may benefit from studying in psychology programs. Such programs offer a diverse range of courses and are very engaging. The material students encounter in psychology classes can often be applied to what they are learning in literature, history, sociology and law courses as well.

Why Study Psychology?

Students who are deciding upon a degree program at San Diego universities come from a diverse variety of backgrounds and have many different interests. Some students even double-major because of their broad interests. No matter a student's academic or career goals, studying psychology is almost always a wise decision.

The field of psychology is very broad. Students who wish to better understand human behavior will be able to take courses that help them to do so. Those students who are interested in criminology or criminal justice will find many of their concerns addressed in psychology. Perhaps more than anything, psychology programs can help students better understand themselves.

Psychology programs offer courses for students who have strengths in writing and creative arts as well as students who are interested in mathematics and analysis. By drawing on both the left and right brain, students are able to enhance their personal and academic strengths. The analysis skills learned in psychology classes can be used throughout a student's university career.

What to Expect When Studying Psychology

Students who choose to study psychology have a challenging, exciting path in front of them. Most psychology majors begin by taking introductory courses in the discipline. The foundational courses cover major psychologists, theories and psychological movements. Students are generally required to take a special statistics course designed for students in the social sciences.

Most universities offer a wide variety of psychology elective courses for students to choose from. Students may choose to take classes in abnormal psychology, forensic psychology or child psychology. All of these courses provide interesting intellectual challenges for students.

Students may be required to complete a capstone paper or project while studying for a psychology degree. Such a paper allows students to refine their research and writing skills while delving into an area that they find particularly interesting.
